Major Update to EMCC Supervision Competencies

by | Aug 2, 2019

With the aim to enhance high-quality high-quality standards in supervision for the benefit of both supervisors and supervisees, EMCC has updated its Supervision Competencies after an extensive 12 month consultation and review process.

Coacharya believes that both mentoring and supervision are complementary to coaching skills. Of the three agencies we are accredited with as trainers, ICF, EMCC and CCE,  EMCC provides pathways to credentialing in mentoring and supervision, in addition to coaching. Ram Ramanathan, Coacharya Founder was part of EMCC‘s review of its Supervision competency framework. Ram has completed his EMCC ESIA certification program.

The new framework, which was recently published, expands the earlier 6  competencies to 8.

Competence 1 relates to contracting in the supervision relationship. This part of the framework explores and clarifies the frame for the supervision relationship.

Competencies 2, 3 and 4 relate to the functions of supervision. These competencies focus on the Developmental, Qualitative and Supportive functions of supervision. The Developmental Function concerns developing the supervisee’s capabilities, the Supportive Function relates to providing a supportive space for the supervisee and the Qualitative Function is to ensure the supervisee is aligned to quality standards and ethics.

Competencies 5, 6 and 7 focus on the supervisor capacity. The term ‘capacity’ here refers to how a person is being rather than what they are doing. The competencies in this framework, describe the various levels of awareness that enable the supervisor to carry out the other competences.

Competence 8 relates to working with groups. This concerns the unique dynamics of group supervision.

Here is a quick overview of the 8 competencies:

  • Competence 1- Manages the Supervision Contract and Process
  • Competence 2- Facilitates Development
  • Competence 3- Provides Support
  • Competence 4- Promotes Professional Standards
  • Competence 5- Self-Awareness
  • Competence 6- Relationship Awareness
  • Competence 7- Systemic Awareness
  • Competence 8- Facilitates Group Supervision
