What truly defines impactful leadership in today’s dynamic corporate landscape? Our recent webinar, “Leading with Impact,” part of the Master Mind Mentor Leader series, offered valuable perspectives on this very question. The session featured Dr. Arvind Agarwal, a distinguished corporate leader, author, and master coach, who shared his extensive experience and wisdom. The conversation, expertly guided by Ujjaval Buch, MCC coach and Coacharya trainer, delved into the core principles that differentiate impactful leaders and how these principles can be cultivated. The discussion underscored the notion that leadership is not merely about holding a position, but about intentionally driving positive change and influencing outcomes through thoughtful action and genuine connection.
The Crucible of Soliciting Business for Coaches
The webinar addressed a challenge faced by many coaches: the often uncomfortable process of soliciting business. Ujjaval initiated this part of the conversation by acknowledging the fear of rejection and the ego issues that can arise when coaches seek clients. He then turned to Dr. Agarwal, a seasoned coach himself, for advice on navigating this crucial aspect of their profession. Dr. Agarwal offered a grounded and relatable perspective, acknowledging his own reliance on word-of-mouth referrals from his network of well-wishers and friends.
Subtle Strategies for Building Awareness
Dr. Agarwal emphasized the importance of subtly building awareness about one’s coaching practice. He shared his personal approach, stating that he doesn’t shy away from sharing his current endeavors with friends and acquaintances. Given his diverse professional background, which includes roles as a CHRO, marketing leader, and CEO, many in his network may not be aware of his current focus as a coach. He stressed the value of seizing opportune moments to humbly share his present work, leaving it to the other person to inquire further if they are interested. This approach, he noted, allows for spreading the word without resorting to aggressive sales tactics.
The Importance of Client Intent in Coaching
Furthermore, Dr. Agarwal highlighted a fundamental aspect of the coaching process: its activation through the client’s genuine desire for self-improvement. He advises both fellow coaches and his own coaching clients that coaching truly takes hold when an individual has a deep intent to work on themselves. In such instances, if a coach’s expertise aligns with the individual’s needs, a professional relationship is likely to form. Echoing the foundational principle of marketing, Dr. Agarwal underscored that the initial step is building awareness. By openly sharing what one does, coaches initiate this crucial stage, paving the way for consideration and eventual engagement.
The Unending Journey of Learning
Ujjaval then shifted the conversation to Dr. Agarwal’s own remarkable journey of continuous learning, highlighting his doctorate from IIT Bombay in a seemingly different field, his significant leadership at RPJ Enterprises, and the years dedicated to authoring his book. He inquired about how Dr. Agarwal maintains his learning agility even at this accomplished stage and how this commitment to learning has shaped his present self.
Dr. Agarwal firmly stated that in today’s world, being a learner is more crucial than ever. He emphasized that the role of a coach inherently involves continuous learning, often directly from clients. He illustrated this with a simple yet impactful anecdote: early in his coaching engagements, he used 360-degree feedback documents with bullet points for strengths and development areas. Observing a client numbering these points for easier reference during their session, he immediately recognized the value of this simple change. This experience taught him the importance of keen observation and the constant potential for learning from clients’ practical insights, leading him to adopt numbering over bullet points in his feedback documents.
Embracing Technology and AI in Coaching
Dr. Agarwal further underscored the significance of embracing technological advancements in facilitating learning and enhancing coaching practices. He highlighted the webinar itself, facilitated by Coacharya’s technology, as an example. He then shared his active use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in his coaching work. Continuing with the 360-degree feedback example, he explained how, after preparing the initial document, he now uses AI to categorise feedback under relevant subheadings, such as business leadership, people leadership, organisation building, and leading change. This allows for the rapid organization of data tailored to the client’s specific context. Furthermore, for lengthy feedback reports, he utilizes AI to summarize each category, generating a concise single-sheet overview, which he then reviews for completeness.
Dr. Agarwal credited his friends and even his wife, an avid AI user, for introducing him to these powerful tools. He recounted instances where his wife shared new AI applications that could streamline his work. He expressed his appreciation for how these technologies simplify tasks, freeing up time and mental energy to focus on more critical aspects of coaching. His concluding thought on this topic was a strong advocacy for lifelong learning and actively connecting with the evolving tools and practices that can enhance one’s effectiveness and allow for greater focus on what truly matters.
