The Hero’s Journey: Dr. Issac Mathai

by | Apr 26, 2023

“If you desire healing,

let yourself fall ill

let yourself fall ill.”

– Rumi

I vividly remember a doctor’s visit while I was growing up. I was in my early teens grappling with some health issues. Other than being utterly uninterested in my challenges, the doctor I consulted was extremely rude and critical. She was unwilling to listen to me, her impatience apparent from how she kept cutting me off. Far from offering help and support, which is pretty much the whole idea behind healthcare, the incident was traumatizing. However, this week’s webinar came as an essential and refreshing reminder of the wonders of a holistic approach and how it can not just treat, but more importantly, heal a person.

In The Hero’s Journey webinar this week, we had the pleasure of listening to Dr. Issac Mathai, a renowned holistic health consultant and founder of SOUKYA. SOUKYA is the world’s first Integrative Health Destination, attracting patients from over 100 nationalities. Celebrities like HRH King Charles III, Queen Consort Camilla, Nobel Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Oscar-winning Hollywood actress Emma Thompson, and Royal families from the Middle East and Europe have stayed in SOUKYA.

Dr. Mathai talked about his hero’s journey and his values and beliefs which form the foundation of his healing practice. Throughout his journey, he has learned the significance of integrating different medicine systems to provide complete healthcare to people worldwide. He has also dedicated his life to making holistic healthcare accessible to all, especially the underprivileged, through his charitable clinics and Rural Holistic Health Centre.

Webinar Highlights

Here are some of the key questions that were explored during the webinar:

  1. What is SOUKYA and the idea behind it?
  2. Why is it important to really know a person before treating them?
  3. What is Dr. Mathai’s holistic approach and what makes it unique?
  4. How does Dr. Mathai’s approach make a difference?
  5. Why is it important to understand emotional traumas and psychosomatic illnesses?
  6. What are the parallels between coaching and Dr. Mathai’s holistic healing approach?

My Takeaway

In the coaching world (and otherwise), the value of listening is oft-repeated. During the webinar, I couldn’t help but notice how this crucial aspect is so often missing in healthcare. So many things that we talk about in coaching–openness and honesty, unconditional positive regard, and non-judgmental spaces–are needed desperately in healthcare. I was amazed to see the similarities between the two. One of the major takeaways for me was the mind-body-spirit connection that is needed for healing to happen and the importance of addressing the emotional and psychological factors for holistic well-being.
