Theory U, Generative Listening and their relevance to coaching

Mar 20, 2019

In his book Theory U, Otto Scharmer models the movement of the ego state we are often imprisoned, in what he terms as “absencing,” to the liberated collective conscious state of the ecosystem, in what he terms as “presencing.” Three of our coaches Bhaskar, John and Ujjaval partnered in presenting Theory U as it relates to coaching. You can see the full webinar video below.

In summary, Scharmer suggests we look at the emerging future as our potential reality instead of downloading past conditioning into this generative vision. This may lead to questioning the legendary GROW model in coaching. Is “reality” relevant to “goals?” Why not envision the emerging future as reality and goal?

The book is a bit hard to follow, so we instead recommend the The Essentials of Theory U: Core Principles and Applications, which is a lot more straightforward. There’s also a course, the first unit of which is free. You can participate on Otto Scharmer’s website.
