Exploring Biomimicry, Design Thinking and Systems Thinking Habits

Imitate the trees. Learn to lose in order to recover, and remember nothing stays the same for long, not even pain. Sit it out. Let it all pass. Let it go.

– May Sarton

What if we stepped into the wild world of discovery as we flipped the script: We have spent years learning about nature, but it’s nature’s turn to teach us!

Introducing a one-of-a-kind synergy, our Coaching for Innovation webinar this week was a sneak peek into Coacharya’s upcoming Integrated Coaching Program: Biomimicry, Design Thinking, and Systems Thinking Habits. The webinar was led by Ujjaval Buch, MCC, Board Member and faculty at Coacharya, and Shiva Subramaniam, PCC, Co-founder of Biomimicry Compass. Together, Ujjaval and Shiva introduced the audience to these concepts while talking about how this intersection can be used for innovative problem-solving.

Shiva, who has worked extensively in the Biomimicry space perfectly captured the essence that this program brings. He said, “Instead of simply saying Wow to nature, you also say how.” As Shiva highlighted the three disciplines, questions poured in constantly with the webinar attendees wanting to know more. Apart from sharing their questions, the audience also left great insights. One of the comments read, “Sounds like how I pick up signs from my garden on resilience, etc?”

Are you also wondering where these three disciplines meet coaching? Ujjaval beautifully brought out the synergy by referring to the ICF core coaching competencies. Referring to Core Competency 2, which emphasizes qualities like openness, curiosity, and flexibility in coaching, he noted that we use various tools and techniques as coaches. By staying open to learning from Mother Nature, she becomes one of our valuable tools.

Webinar Highlights

Here are some of the key themes that were explored during the webinar:

  1.  Coaching, Biomimicry, and Design Thinking
  2.  Biomimicry: Learning From Nature’s Strategies

  4.  Nature’s Solutions: Biomimicry in Coaching Techniques
  5.  Design Thinking Coaching: Prototype, Test, Iterate
